Letter of Healing – How to Flourish After Depression

My teaching memoir, Letters of Healing – How to flourish after depression, is a personal story of healing from a moderate depression. I got this unpleasant diagnosis in spring 2008 and now 17 years later I see this all as a game changer, this was my dark night of the soul. This has been like snake sheading its skin.

Why I wrote this book first in English? Well, to be honest, because of the markets and because I am a member of the Hay House Writer’s Community and they offer few possibilities during a year to send the book proposal without a literary agent and of course these proposals and books needs to be in English. I do not say that writing in Finnish would be less impressive or less important, but this was my choice.

Even though Finnish is my native language, I have a special love relationship with English language. That has always been the easiest of foreign languages for me and it is very strong language for me in many ways, like one of the coaches I have worked with over the years said, sometimes the other language brings forth different sides of us. When I write in English I feel more free. More in touch with something very genuine, authentic and softer side of me. Maybe something the depression came to set free.

I am more a fiction writer, but as this was the must write memoir book, I chose to write letters. The book is in two parts, first one covers the letters to myself, my family and for my great art psychotherapist, to give the reader some background. The second part is about the process of healing.

Depression isn’t something that magically appears over night, so as well, it can’t be healed in short period of time. Healing from depression is a long road, I see it like the life before and life after. There is a whole new person being born when peeling the layers of depression and that person may need different things, different life style choices. Maybe this is the surrendering to life, and listening one’s soul and heart.

At the moment this book is at Hay House Writer’s Community’s Book Proposal contest and in May 2025 we will know more. I am aspiring to publish this book, either with publisher or via self-publishing but I believe as 280 million people in this world have depression, we need to share our stories of healing to bring forth hope to those who are struggling with it at the moment or in the future.
